WHODAI took each step with restrained yet cautious excitement as he climbed to the second floor. When he reached the top of the stairs, he moved to Cianneâs bedroom with caution. He knew that she wasnât sleeping well and he didnât want her to catch him if she was awake. But the sound of a male voice coming from her bedroom urged him to move faster.
Concerned, jealous, and a bit anger...Whodai was at her door in a flash, peeking through the small opening, unseen with a clear view.
âSoahn, wake up.â Felix placed his hand on Cianneâs shoulder and gave her a gentle shake.
Whodai bristled at Felixâs audacity to touch her but said nothing to announce his presence. He even managed to stay quiet as he witnessed Felix face paled as he stumbled away from Cianne, who popped her eyes open. Whodai almost retreated himself. Not due to fear, but shock.
Her eyes were completely blood red.
Felix, a seasoned Protector, tried to dart away. His eyes even met Whodaiâs but before he could say anything, Cianne sat up on the bed and Felix was yanked back by some invisible force. Felix thrashed and kicked, knocking over a vase that sat on a high table with his foot as he clawed desperately at his neck.
He canât breathe, Whodai thought as he watched as Cianne seemed to regard Felix for a few seconds. Her vacant eyes stared at the Guard without compassion. When she tilted her head, Whodai heard the snap of Felixâs neck then a thud as his body fell limp to the floor.
The sight prompted Whodai forward and into the room. He only managed four steps before being forced to his knees.
âCianne,â Whodai strained her name out. He tried to stand but realized his body was no longer under his control. âRelease me now.â
Cianne turned to face him. Her eyes were still red, her expression blank yet devastatingly beautiful.
Whodai stifled his desires and focused on surviving. âRelease me,â he commanded. What he didnât expect was how easily Cianne ignored his demand. Not only did she ignore his demand, it must have agitated her because her response was instant and excruciating. Whodai gritted his teeth because he was unable to scream. It felt as if he was being squeezed, or his skin was shrinking, crushing him in the process.
He fixed his eyes on hers, silently pleading with Cianne but she looked at him like he was of no importance, a lower being, something she wanted to see die slowly.
Dying was exactly what he was doing. In the haze of near unconsciousness, Whodai heard a faint, fading sound. His eyes fluttered to the baby monitor that sat on her nightstand.
One of the children was stirring, possibly waking. Whatever the case, Cianneâs attention turned to the monitor. With his vision waning and death clawing at his soul, he was shocked to find himself suddenly flat on his back sucking in oxygen.
Cianneâs attention strayed from him entirely as she slowly walked by his sprawled-out body, seeming to forget or care that he was even there.
